2nd Draft of Album Cover - Lucy Barker 9063

Draft 2

I've made in improvements from my first draft by changing the font because some thought it was too sophisticated and that it wouldn't stand out to a younger teen audiance. I changed the font to "Britannic Bold" because it is bold and stand out against the picture and is easy too read, which is important, it also isn't to babyish and the typical font type you would find in a teen girls pop magazine which is something I want to avoid. I added an outer glow and it is lined in a pink identical to the one on her lips, I didn't want too much pink because I didn't want it to be too feminine but I like the affect it has because it matches her lips and some colours in her scarf. This makes it her "own" type of font.

Lucy Barker 9063 - Poster for Grace - ancillary task 3

Draft 1

The poster for Grace works with my other ancillary tasks, because it has her with the same outfit and the locations are very similar but it also has synergy with the music video because by the concert dates, there are the most recognisable characters from the video. I'm not sure whether I like this idea but I wanted some synergy with the video so I will be asking my TA if they like the idea before deciding to keep them. I think the concert dates are a good idea and I've kept the venues small because as an indie/singer song writer artist who is only just making her way onto the scene I feel that these kind of venues is were a star like Grace would start of. I'm not keen on the text because I think it needs to be the same as the text on the other ancillary tasks, the album cover and the magazine advertisement. I'm thinking of next time using a gaming font to show clash with the real life images, because we are living in a real world, which is the problem highlighted in the video, that we spend to long on games and living virtual lives.

Lucy Barker 9063 ancillary task 2- Graces' advertisement for a magazine

Draft 1

I'm really happy with the outcome of the first draft of my advertisement for a magazine because I think it looks professional and definitely not babyish, it would stand out to the older adults that we are targeting but also the younger teenagers. The colour scheme, green, is very natural which reflect our artist and the images add synergy because they are taken from the music video. This important because not only does it help make a link from the artist to the video but it also introduces the video to some audiences who may not have seen it. I think to really emphasise this point in my second draft I will add some text saying "check out grace's new video now" maybe with a link to the youtube video. I also think I will make the text colourful and the text will be the same colour in the advert for the magazine, the album cover and the poster.

Lucy Barker 9063 - Album Cover

This is my first draft for my album cover, I enhanced Grace's lips by making them brighter and added fake eyelashes to make her look really done-up. This works because she isn't pulling a serious face, making it look as though she is making fun of the outrageously fake popstars and showing that you can have fun. I like the overall effect of the photo because it would really stand out against all the current album covers on a shelf in Tesco, which is what we want it to do because Grace is fighting away all norms. I also like the earthy feel of the greenness and the reeds because makes it look natural and like she's standing in a forest. From feedback I've decided that a better font can be used, one that will stand out to an older audience and a teen audience but something that also looks graceful, feedback from adults has also told me that background looked like a common which is a piece of land open for public use. This wasn't intended and younger audiences may struggle to make the reference but it is affective because Grace has found the literal 'Common Ground' and she is all made-up but is still acting her usual self, which is what happens in the video.

Lucy Barker - song titles for the album

I created 12 song names for the back cover of Graces Album

1. Common Ground

2. Turtles will come looking

3. Mad Times

4. Broken Faith

5. Looking for curtains

6.Throw away your drugs

7. The Shock of dance

8. Bulldog

9. The fight for Sanity

10. Fools

11. Creator

12. Goodbye Reginald

13. Swimming in the dark

These are the song tittles that I came up with for the back cover of Grace's album. I came up with 13 because that is the average amount of songs for an album, they all reflect the stars image - they are humorous and I particularly like the 'fight for sanity' song name because that can also be related to the video.

Magazine Advertisement by Maddy Ryder

Final Poster by Maddy Ryder

Poster by Maddy Ryder

I came up with this idea for a poster featuring Grace:

i used pictures from the photo shoot to create intertextuality between the products I created. I chose this particular photo because it uses humour - Grace looks serious, but any actual seriousness is diffused by the text. 'searching for a common ground works on two levels; it related to her pose, as she appears to be looking forward, and references the title of her song and Album, 'Common ground'.

I chose to make the background black and white to make her stand out more. This also creates intertextuality between the poster and the video, which featured the materialistic characters in duller colours while Grace was shown as vibrant and energetic. Both the poster and the video create the impression of a colourful character in a dull, colourless world. The caption searching for a 'common ground' shows that she has hope, and will not accept her current situation. by doing this she is also creating hope of a better world for her fans.

I decided against a plain background because it looked too plain; there was not enough detail, and so the cover was not interesting enough to catch the audience's eye. The use of pink, which is normally considered a very girly colour, contrasts with Grace's strong, down-to-earth appearance. This is effective as it shows her as a more complex character, rather than one-dimensional; she is strong and 'humble;, but at the same time she embraces her femininity.

I chose this picture instead because the outdoor setting keeps with the 'natural' image I am trying to create for Grace. i had her wear a hat as well because it differentiates between the photo shoot and the more casual look she wore in the music video. She appears more stylish, but not too over-the-top.

I chose this design for the side of the album - it keeps with the colour scheme of white, black and pink used on the front cover.

This is the design for the back cover of the album - I have again used pink and black, and included a picture across the top because I feel this extra detail is interesting without dominating the whole area.

Album Cover Draft by Maddy Ryder

This is the first draft for the album cover:

I overcame some issues, such as the font - the font I had originally chosen was too harsh, and I felt it did not fit with the picture, so i changed it ti a thinner, more simple one.

I am still not entirely satisfied; I think the text on the bottom is not entirely in the centre, and I am not sure about the use of a black band across the bottom, with white text.

These are all issues I will address in the next draft of my album cover.

Editing Photographs by Maddy Ryder

Before I could begin to create the album cover, I needed to make a few changes to my chosen photograph:

I edited the background to plain white, and made Grace's shirt a little brighter. I also highlighted races' lips and eyes, as i felt they didn't stand out enough, and added a little more colour to her hair, as the lighting made it appear too yellow.

Album Cover Photo Shoot by Maddy Ryder

Having completed the photo shoot, I now have several pictures I would consider using for the front cover of the Album:

My final choice is this picture:

It is appealing as it uses a pain white background (apart from the bit of blue, which can easily be edited out). It features a low-angle shot of Grace, making her appear in control. This is important as I want her to appear as a strong, confident female artist.

For this reason I decided to stick to natural make-up, because showing her with exaggerated eyes and lips may make her appear too girlish/vulnerable, the opposite of what I want to achieve.

The pose is also quite casual which fits with her character.

Album Cover Design Plan by Maddy Ryder

For the font on the album cover, I would like to use something modern and unique - I want it to stand out, like Grace herself does.  For this I considered several fonts:

My favourite is this one:

I like it because it looks modern and informal, which I feel will fit well with Graces' image. The style almost looks like graffiti, which would certainly appeal to a younger crowd, but it isn't too 'out there' so as to put an older generation off.

For the cover itself, I would consider a plain white background:

This would make Grace the main focus of the picture, although in order to ensure there was nothing on the cover distracting from her, I would use plain colours for the font, not flashy gold like the Album cover above.

The colour white also reflects the simplicity of the Star Image we have created for Grace.

because of the natural, down-to-earth image Grace has, I would also consider using an outdoor setting as the background for the album cover:

Unlike the picture above, however, I would not include an instrument. Grace plays a piano, not a guitar in the video, which would be highly impractical to set up. I would also not include anything that distracts from her; if an instrument is included, it might become the main focus of the picture, rather than Grace.

Album Cover Photo Shoot Plan by Maddy Ryder

For my Album cover I would like to keep with the star image we have created in the video; a down to earth, unmaterialistic young female singer. This goes against conventions, as many female starts produce quite voyeuristic images, usually wearing heavy makeup.

I would like to portray Grace as casual yet stylish, and I would also like to keep with the colour scheme presented in the video. For these reasons I have chosen to dress Grace in a long sleeved jumper in white, grey, blue or green (natural, simplistic colours) with a scarf and dark clue jeans, along with her trademark white and blue trainers:

Once I had decides the types of clothing I wanted Grace to wear, I used the computer programme Bitstrips to create a cartoon image of Grace, allowing me to try a multitude of different outfits to see what worked best:

The pictures that I felt reflected Grace's star image the most was the green top with the blue scarf; the green stands out, and is bright while still keeping with the 'natural' colour scheme.

I would also consider having Grace wear boots instead of trainers - this would give her a more stylish look, without being too formal.
