Updated Ideas - By Lucy Barker and Maddy Ryder

-We are going to take the viewers on a journey of Tatiana’s day starting from waking up and then doing ordinary things like walking the dog – so we get a view on how materialistic the world is.
-Then we are taking you to a party were she will look really out of place because she will be dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt where as everyone at the party will be dressed in gold the colour of wealth.
-When she walks into the party there will be young children on video games back to back and no longer communicating
-many of the party guests will be on their phones taking selfies showing how everyone has become self-obsessed due to all the materials we have become absorbed in, children will also be copying the guests showing how these characteristics are being past down to the next generation.
-When Tatiana walks into the party, we will have a series of reaction shocks and then everyone dropping their drinks.
-We have also planned to show young girls putting on lipstick in front of the mirror.

Risk Assessments By Lucy Barker

Risk Assessments

We got permission to use locations and permission from our actors (including extra's) by sending them permission slips.

We had to assess any dangers that may occur whilst filming our music video. This included bad weather for example we are planning on filming outside and if the equipment falls over it could be a danger and also we are working with a dog. We solved this problem by checking weather forecasts and planning several shooting times so we can hopefully get all the shots we need. We also had an animal wrangler who was in charge of looking after the dog when it was used on shoots.

TA feedback from research 1 by Lucy Barker

Target Audience Research from TA research 1

We used polldaddy to create a survey to send out to our TA using social media to find out more about how they access music videos, what they look for e.t.c.

We found out most people watch music videos on their computers which is interesting, it's not what I was expecting because I thought people were exposed to them by watching music channels on TV through own experience.

Most of our TA find out about music videos through the internet and also word of mouth which can be spread using social networks. I didn't think about magazines being an option but I'm not surprised because many people of our TA's age read magazines, and even some lifestyle magazines have a section were they recommend music and music videos.

We wanted to find out why they watched music videos and we got mixed answers back. Most said they watch it for humour or because they want to see the artist preform and see what the lyrics are all about. This is good because this is what we have planned to do so it should appeal to them.

Again, in this question we can see that humour is important as well as the music video becoming a visual aid to the lyrics. Interestingly nobody said anything about seeing the artist, which in a way, is the purpose of a music video, to promote the artist.

The video that our TA describe that they dislike is the kind of video a pop artist might produce. We are keeping our music video much simpler than that, it won't be 'flashy' and the lyrics will relate to the imagery and video.

Nobody said they wouldn't watch a concept based video, which is good because it means they are not put off by the idea.

Next time we carry out target audience research we will try and get more people to fill it out.

Creating a Star Image by Lucy Barker

Tatiana's Star Image

After researching Tatiana and finding out she doesn’t have a very strong star image it has become our mission to create one that will be widely recognized and can link all the promotion packages we will be creating.

In order to make it appeal to our TA we need to use an actress that is of similar age so that they can relate to her, and the part of our audience that is a little bit older will understand because they may have been through a stage when they assumed materialism was important, or they may have children so would be aware of the problems that occur.

As I have researched similar artists I have realized that the indie and singer/songwriter artists tend to emphasize their talent rather than there looks, although they do tend to make an effort to present themselves well. See images below for examples.

In this photo Lauren isn't as glammed up as the average pop star and her hair is natural and her costume is something a 17 year old girl would wear on an everyday basis. This is something I hope to do with my artist, and then the look would become staple in all of the promotion packaging.

This will create an Ideological power - the audience will be influenced by Tatiana because the music video will show that you can still be happy without being obsessed with what you look like things you don't need.

Target Audience Research 1 by Maddy Ryder and Lucy Barker

We used Polldaddy to create a survey for our first Target Audiance Research, we then sent this to people using social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Polldaddy allows us to keep track of answers without having to distribute questionnaires, it also allows us to distribute it to more people.

Costume update - 10/10/13

We went into a charity shop to pick up these costume pieces because we are searching for gold items as the colour suggests wealth and materialism.

Responsibilities sheet

We are using a responsibilities sheet because although we are directing together this makes it clear what role each of us is going to take most control of but we will be making decisions together. We filled this out first we knew our roles from the start. This is important because if we were producing a music video we would have more people involved and we would need to keep control over them.

This feedback sheet is used to help me improve our blog and keep on track with what needs work.

Script Breakdown by Lucy Barker and Maddy Ryder

This is our script breakdown which is where we have written everything down so far including equipment, props, costume, actors/actresses, locations and script/storyboard that we need to organise. This is to help us see what we need to get or need to do and we can keep adding to it as we go along.

TA profile by Lucy Barker and Maddy Ryder

Our Target audience is 18-30 both male and females because we believe anyone over this age is capable and aware of the problem of consumerism and materialism particularly in those young teenagers and children. We want to include parents in our audience because they will also be aware of the affect and those that aren’t will be when they have watched the video. We are targeting an audience that is interested in the indie/ singer songwriter genre but as most people are involved in a wide variety of music genres nowadays we are not narrowly targeting them.

We wanted to find out where our target audience saw music videos, why they watched them, what type of music videos they would usually watch, would they watch a concept based music video and how they watch them (e.g. internet or TV). We are going to use polldaddy to carry out this research.

Doing this research on them is important because it tells us how we can get our music video to reach our TA.

We found out some interesting statistics on the internet about our target audience
We found out that our TA group had the highest percentage use of internet on their mobiles and internet purchases which means that because our music video will be uploaded to the internet (youtube) it will reach them.

Influences and Intentions By Lucy Barker and Maddy Ryder

Influences and Intentions

As well as our similar product research, some of our ideas were influenced by Darren from Blueprint Film Media in Lincoln. He came in to talk to us about producing a music video and we had the chance to ask him questions about some of our ideas. We had a problem, which was that we wanted to film our character getting up in the morning but we weren't sure about lighting because the curtains would be closed so he told us to think creatively around it. We decided that the curtains won't be closed completely and some light will shine through and that is what has woken her up in the morning. We will have her squinting at the light.

As well as Darren from BluePrint Film the music video 'Tighten Up' by The Black Keys also inspired us because the director used children to make a point, like we want to.

We also like the way humour is used, which wouldn't be possible without the children.

The kids are taking on adults roles which is why it is so humorous. We want to involve kids with materialistic views because then it sends out a more powerful message.

Similar Product Research 4 - Mumford and Sons – Little Lion Man by Maddy Ryder

Mumford and Sons – Little Lion Man

This video is a performance based one of the Indie genre, featuring the artists playing their instruments and singing for the whole of the mucic video.

The mise en scene is simplistic– the whole thing is set in a barn, and features the musicians themselves playing and singing the song. The lighting used is strung room the ceiling, giving the whole pace a definite old fashioned look, and the musicians themselves are dressed in old fashioned clothes – waistcoats and shirts.

Unlike Pop music videos, the sound, like the setting is kept natural to reflect the genre. No electronic instruments or auto tune are used. There are no special effects, and the editing is kept simple. This is a common convention for music videos of an Indie/Folk genre, and the plainer, down to earth setting of the video matches the style of music and instruments used.

This music video does not follow Todorov's Theory of Equilibrium, as it is performative rather than narrative. This breaks the conventions for music videos, making the video stand out, and by focusing purely on the band rather than a story, it makes the artists themselves stand out. In our music video we plan to use a mix of performance, narrative and concept, aiming both to send a message through our video, and make a name for the artist.

I chose this video to analyse because has a natural, realistic look to it, rather than the false, flashy computerised videos seen with many popular songs. For my own , although I plan on a more narrative/concept based music video, I would also like to create a more natural, realistic look.

Similar Product Research 3 - Arctic Monkeys – Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? by Maddy Ryder

Arctic Monkeys – Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?

This music video is a narrative based video of the Indie genre, focusing on telling a story that many of the audience members will be able to relate to. The video tackles real life issues, from drinking, to romantic troubles, and even the use of drugs (both in the video, featuring hallucinations, and the title).

The main feeling behind this music video is a depressed and annoyed one, with the singer Alex Turner drinking away his sorrows at the beginning and then the lyrics expressing irritation. The story is easy to follow as the song lyrics talk about him calling a girl at 3:00am and her not replying. Although the use of hallucinations means that this video is more surreal than most, the mise en scene is believable.

Close ups of the artists face, focusing especially on his eyes, are used to highlight the fact that he is drunk, and possibly on drugs, and also to show his emotion - the increasing panic and loss of reality as his hallucinations increase.

We also see shots of him walking down the street, making his situation clear; we can see that he is alone, very late at night (or very early in the morning), giving a sense of being an outsider/isolation.
